In vanilla survival mode, players need to monitor a few parameters: health, hunger, and applied effects. This is the basic setup for anyone starting Minecraft. However, over time, some players get bored with this simplicity and look for something more hardcore or realistic. If that sounds familiar, this mod might be perfect for you. It radically changes the standard approach to survival and gameplay in the cubic world and will engage you from the very first minutes.

The Thirst Was Taken mod adds a new "thirst" parameter, meaning you now need to monitor your character’s water levels. If the levels drop too low, your character will experience dehydration and take damage. The mod introduces new types of water, unique mechanics, items, and a lot of related content. While thirst systems exist in other mods, this one offers a well-thought-out and immersive experience. Let’s look at the main features it adds to Minecraft.

Thirst is a new parameter that, like hunger, must be maintained. The rate at which it drops depends on how often and what type of water your character drinks. The mod includes many unique mechanics, which we’ll explain so you can understand how this system works and how to use it effectively. Installing this mod means you’re ready for added challenge and realism, so always keep the right type of water with you and replenish it regularly to stay comfortable.

Minecraft now features four types of water, each with different properties:
· Dirty (red marker) – water collected from natural bodies is unfiltered by default;
· Slightly dirty (gray marker) – found in some biomes, but still unsafe to drink without risk of poisoning or illness;
· Acceptable – achieved by filtering water using a campfire or furnace; safe to drink and restores thirst;
· Purified – the best water source available, highly valuable and even tradeable on servers.

Important: Any water can be purified through different methods, so always aim to upgrade your supply to "purified" for better hydration results.
You can purify water using a campfire or a furnace. A campfire increases the purity by one level — for example, turning dirty water into slightly dirty water. Repeating the process eventually yields fully purified water.

Using a furnace is faster, improving water by two levels. This means slightly dirty water becomes purified in a single step. This gives players options for how they want to handle purification.

Your thirst rate is also affected by the environment, so climate matters. In hot and dry biomes, your water depletes faster — a realistic feature. Building in humid biomes helps conserve hydration levels.

Traveling through different biomes shows clear differences in how quickly your thirst drops. The more biomes added by other mods, the more variations you’ll need to account for. It’s wise to always carry extra water in containers to restore thirst wherever you are.
The developer ensured compatibility with mods like Create and Apple Skin. For example, you can create filtration devices with Create, or see thirst restoration values for food and drinks when using Apple Skin. Drinks from other mods, like juices, teas, or even alcohol, will also help restore hydration.

Additionally, the water bottle stack size is increased to 64, letting players carry larger reserves for extended trips or dangerous adventures.

This mod adds a fresh and challenging layer to Minecraft’s survival system. Whether you’re in vanilla or a custom modpack, it deepens gameplay with realistic mechanics. Now, you’ll need to manage hydration, purify water, and plan your survival strategy more carefully — making your time in the Minecraft world even more immersive and rewarding.
