Dynamic Light from Torches

Players often have to venture into mines to gather various resources, loot treasure chests, collect rare artifacts, mark locations with found spawners on their maps, and more. Every time a player descends into such places, they need to bring a lot of torches to place around for good lighting. Without torches or similar light sources, exploring underground comfortably is nearly impossible, as the player may fall into pits, encounter mobs (which mostly spawn at night or in dark areas), accidentally trigger traps, or fall into lava.

The Dynamic Light mod adds dynamic lighting to the game, allowing you literally from the first minutes of survival to explore mines carrying only one torch to light your surroundings! And that’s not all: even if mobs are burning in front of you, they emit light, so even in total darkness, shooting any mob with a flaming bow will light up the area. Vanilla Minecraft lacks this feature, so mod developers added this functionality through separate mods.

What do you usually take with you to a mine? Usually, a bunch of torches, coal, wood, weapons, tools, potions. Sometimes crafting enough torches takes several inventory slots, and on long underground journeys, an entire row of resources is needed to keep crafting torches as you go. Familiar situation, right? For such cases, mods adding dynamic lighting are recommended so you can light the area wherever you are, anytime. Just don’t confuse this feature with cheating tools found in some hacked clients!

Dynamic lighting means light emission in Minecraft from any item you hold. It can also come from nearby objects that move, like burning mobs, torches in hand, campfires, and more. Holding such an item automatically lights up the area around you within a certain radius. The range and brightness are the same as vanilla light sources. The system supports most common sources: torches, fire, campfires, and more.

For players, dynamic lighting support lets them freely explore mines or travel at night holding a torch without needing to carry stacks of torches. Just walk with a torch in your hand, and the area is lit. However, if you hold a weapon instead, the area around you becomes dark again. So you still need to place stationary light sources like campfires or torches on the ground. Dynamic lighting is compatible with many shaders, and if you install Dynamic Light, you can add graphic enhancements alongside it.

Dynamic lighting also works with various lamps (when held), lava buckets, and many other vanilla items. You can also use modded items if the mod supports it, but you’ll need to check each mod individually. If a mob is on fire, it emits light, so players can shoot mobs with flaming arrows to light their surroundings.

This system is commonly used on many servers, but some servers ban it by default, so when installing such mods, consider the servers you play on and read their rules carefully to avoid bans. Overall, dynamic lighting helps in many ways—resource gathering, improving the game’s atmosphere, visuals, and more. It’s not the most popular mod but is available for most launchers and regularly updated.
