Almost every player eventually accumulates a lot of different items that only take up space and aren’t used. For example — tools, armor, weapons, horse armor, decorative elements, doors, trapdoors, and many other materials. And if you trade with villagers, this list grows several times — especially when you’re trying to get a discount from NPCs or find a specific item. All this “junk” ends up lying around in chests, so you naturally want to get rid of it while also recovering at least some of the resources spent on it. You know that feeling, right? Now you finally have the opportunity to do that!

The modification DarkSmelting - RPG Smelt Armor, Tools, Weapons (we’ll refer to it as DarkSmelting further in the text) offers a new way to recycle items in Minecraft, allowing you to get back a small amount of the materials used to craft them. Full refunds are unrealistic, but you’ll still recover something — and that’s better than nothing. This new mechanic lets you dispose of unwanted gear and reuse the materials for future progress. It’s an important feature that’s been missing in Minecraft for a long time. And while Mojang isn’t in a hurry to add it officially, you can already enjoy it through this mod.

When trading with villagers, players often end up with a lot of gear — armor, tools, weapons. While exploring the world, you also find dungeons and treasure rooms filled with low-value items. But all of those can now be smelted using a regular furnace and any fuel (coal, kelp, dry leaves, wood). The process lets you reclaim part of the resources. Usually, each item gives back one ingot. For example, smelting a diamond helmet or chestplate gives 1 diamond. The same applies to iron and other materials. It’s not much, but it’s something.

· Get rid of unwanted items. Players now have extra motivation to clear out chests, barrels, and shulker boxes. Free up space and get some bonus resources in return;
· Engaging process. For vanilla survival, this is a new mechanic that’s been missing for all game versions, making item recycling genuinely interesting for every player;
· Extra resources. As mentioned, you get about one diamond, emerald, or ingot per item — not much, but still useful for crafting and repairs;

· Supports various materials. You can smelt nearly any item made of gold, netherite, diamond, iron, or copper;
· Uses regular furnaces. No need to craft any complicated machines — just use a regular furnace and add fuel. A simple, familiar process for every player;
· Automation. If you’re using industrial or tech mods, you can fully automate the smelting process by using redstone systems, hoppers, or item transport mechanisms.

The DarkSmelting mod has over 2.5 million downloads, making it one of the most popular in this category. It’s actively updated, compatible with all major loaders (Forge, Fabric, NeoForge), and is included in many top modpacks. The recycling system is simple and clear, working smoothly in all versions — both in vanilla survival and with industrial mods like Applied Energistics. If you need to dispose of a large number of items, this mod is perfect for that purpose, offering full functionality and stability.

This mod lets you smelt not only tools, armor, and weapons but also many other familiar items — horse armor, doors, trapdoors, buckets, and more that naturally accumulate over time. Large clans can even build automated recycling systems, sending all unwanted items into separate containers that feed them directly into furnaces. This mechanic ensures you always have free space for essential items while continuously generating extra materials for your survival, settlement growth, or clan development.
