In Minecraft, there are several types of armor that allow you to roam through various biomes, locations, and mines without worrying about mobs attacking, facing bosses, or other players. At the start of survival, a player can only afford leather armor, then after a short time craft gold or iron armor, and later try to make a diamond set. This armor can also be enchanted to gain more benefits and effects. And the best set is netherite, which is upgraded by combining diamond armor with netherite ingots. But here’s the question: why can’t you also upgrade armor from leather to iron, and from iron to diamond?
The Better Equipment Smithing mod offers a new armor upgrading mechanic in Minecraft, allowing you to upgrade one material to another using the smithing table. The whole process happens inside this block, and if the player doesn’t want to throw away, for example, iron armor, they can easily upgrade it using this tool. This is a perfect tool for most players, saving resources and adding a new mechanic to the game, making standard survival more diverse. Ready to take a closer look at all the benefits of this mod?
You now have a great opportunity to save some of your resources in the game and upgrade your armor without discarding previously created sets. For example, a player made leather armor. If they don’t need it, in vanilla it is usually just discarded since better armor is available. But even at full progression, that is a resource loss. So why lose them when you can just upgrade one armor set to another? That’s exactly what this mod helps with. You can upgrade leather armor to iron, iron armor to diamond, and diamond to netherite (the latter is already possible in vanilla).
The entire process is done via the smithing table. You simply place the armor piece there, add the material you want to upgrade to, and must add a template without which you cannot perform the upgrade. The mod author added a cheap recipe for the template, mostly requiring cobblestone and wood. We included the recipe here so you can estimate the materials needed. The whole procedure takes just seconds, and you get the upgraded armor piece at the output. This is very convenient and fast for any player wanting to save resources.
Minecraft offers many possibilities, but thanks to the fan community, this list has grown hundreds of times as players collectively add new options, design features, and tools to enhance graphics. It’s similar with armor: one mod developer decided not to discard previously crafted sets, but to add unique functionality to the game so anyone can upgrade their armor. Although you need a template and a smithing table, the process only takes a few clicks and the template is cheap to craft!
Templates became necessary only after Minecraft 1.20, when they were introduced. Better Equipment Smithing existed before that, so players could upgrade armor without templates. If your game version is earlier than 1.20, you don’t need templates, which means fewer materials and simpler steps. Overall, this creates interesting and engaging gameplay that complements vanilla mechanics, giving players the choice to keep, discard, or upgrade their old armor.
Ultimately, players decide what to do with their armor sets. You can also install additional mods for recycling previously crafted items to recover some of the used materials. For example, the Corail Recycler mod helps recycle items in vanilla Minecraft, compensating for “dismantling.” Players can even automate this with funnels and chests. Feel free to share in the comments what you do with unused vanilla Minecraft items and whether you use mods for recycling.
